Guidance on our
Student Elective Awards

  How do I apply?
Download an application form from the website, and read the terms and conditions specific to the award to ensure you are eligible.

Email one copy and post 4 hard copies (one must be signed by the student) to the Healing Foundation before the closing date.

Your application must be accompanied by one letter of support from your supervisor and one letter from the Dean of your Medical School (or appropriate authority) stating their approval of your application.

How soon after applying will I know the outcome?
You will receive immediate acknowledgement of receipt of your application by email and also a formal letter approximately 6-8 weeks after the closing date informing you of the outcome of the awards.

How do I choose a title for my project?
The Healing Foundation does not supply a list of available topics or titles. The topic, title and supervisor is your choice (normally with your supervisor's guidance).

Please click here for information on past successful elective awards which may help to inform your choice of research area.

How do I choose a supervisor for my project?
It is your responsibility to approach prospective supervisors; your supervisor must be within the UK or Ireland and be willing to support you during your elective period. The Healing Foundation does not supply a list of available supervisors.

Where will I carry out my elective research?
The elective period is carried out in the hospital or University of your choice, but most likely at the institution where your supervisor is based.

The Healing Foundation does not offer internships, unpaid employment or research work.

Your research must be carried out in the UK or Ireland.
We do not fund research electives abroad.

How do I choose my elective dates?
Most medical schools (or similar) set a period for elective research. The Healing Foundation will fund a maximum of 8 weeks of research; more often between 6-8 weeks. However, more specifically, it is your responsibility to choose dates that suit you and your supervisor.

  Can research be funded retrospectively?
No. We can fund research taking place approximately 2 months or more after the closing date to allow time for review of all applications. Occasionally, Peer Reviewers suggest changes to the application (the title or methodology, for example) before research begins.

Are there any qualifications required such as previous research experience?
  No.

When will the grant money be given?
Following the review process, the grant money is sent in full after you have signed a contract stating that you accept the award terms and conditions. Your supervisor is also required to sign a letter stating that they accept responsibility for supervising your elective. This money is normally sent approximately one month before the start of the elective.

Which awards am I eligible for?
The criteria for candidates can be found in the terms and guidelines for each award. These are available to download on the website.

What happens if I experience problems during my elective? Will an extension be granted?
Extensions are granted at the discretion of the Healing Foundation. They will only be considered if the Healing Foundation is informed of any problems before the deadline for the Final Report.

If the Final Report is not submitted on time, the Healing Foundation reserves the right to request repayment of the elective funds in full.

Will there be opportunities to present or publish my work after my elective?
The Healing Foundation does not formally offer advice on publishing work, although occasionally Peer Reviewer comments may cover this.

Elective Students who have successfully completed their report may be asked to present at a Research Council Meeting or Trustees Meeting. Also, opportunities are offered to present a poster or submit a PowerPoint presentation at the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons’ Winter or Spring Meeting each year. Subject to availability of spaces, students who have completed Craniofacial Electives may have the opportunity to present a poster at the Craniofacial Society of Great Britain and Ireland Annual Conference.
